The War in his Heart x Mya Kay x 6/2
Khadijah placed the phone down face down to keep from having a snap reaction. When Shelley asked her for $15,000 to pay off someone she did a “business” deal with, Khadijah said ‘no’ without a thought. She found it interesting how her cousin wanted to make her feel bad for leaving Philly, but there were plenty of times Shelley left her hanging, even once at a robbery by not showing up for the job. It was the fact that she was Khadijah’s cousin that kept the guys from hunting her down. Khadijah also didn’t like how she made it sound like a real estate deal, when in reality, she’d gotten in bed with the wrong person and now had to pay up.
Khadijah rubbed her temples and closed her eyes, breathing in deeply. God, this is bad. I’ve never hid my past from people, but bad press is bad press. Over the years, Khadijah did podcast interviews and even spoke at women’s events and colleges, sharing her story. She never went into detail, but she did share that she had a criminal history. She wasn’t worried about the blogs as much as she was worried about how her business would take a hit and how it would look to Melrose Retail. Since she had never done any real time, when they asked her about her past, she didn’t tell them. They ran her background check, and nothing came up.
Emerald’s Path x Dee LaSure x 6/3
Jeremiah took the pendant from Emerald’s fingers and waited patiently as she gathered her braids together with both hands. He stared for a moment at the smooth unblemished expanse at the back of her neck before bending and placing the softest kiss in that spot.
He fastened the pendant around Emerald’s neck and admired how good it looked against her creamy sienna brown skin. He came from behind the overstuffed chair and took her hand in his. He was steady and sincere when he whispered her name. “Emmie.”
Emerald craned her neck to look up at Jeremiah. If anyone was to see her at the moment, they would swear she had the stars and the moon in her eyes, and Jeremiah was the man that put them there. She was well aware that he would do anything to make her happy.

“I knew from the moment God spoke to me that you were my person, and my life would forever change. The way we spent time getting to know one another as friends before we ever had our first date meant so much to me. We may have had a bit of drama when we were supposed to go on that first date, but from the moment I walked into that emergency room, I knew God had something different in mind. You were hurting, yet you still moved with grace. You were guarded, but still kind. Since I’ve known you, you’ve made me want to slow down and see someone fully, for the first time in a long time.”
