The War in his Heart x Mya Kay x 6/2

Khadijah placed the phone down face down to keep from having a snap reaction. When Shelley asked her for $15,000 to pay off someone she did a “business” deal with, Khadijah said ‘no’ without a thought. She found it interesting how her cousin wanted to make her feel bad for leaving Philly, but there were plenty of times Shelley left her hanging, even once at a robbery by not showing up for the job. It was the fact that she was Khadijah’s cousin that kept the guys from hunting her down. Khadijah also didn’t like how she made it sound like a real estate deal, when in reality, she’d gotten in bed with the wrong person and now had to pay up.

Khadijah rubbed her temples and closed her eyes, breathing in deeply. God, this is bad. I’ve never hid my past from people, but bad press is bad press. Over the years, Khadijah did podcast interviews and even spoke at women’s events and colleges, sharing her story. She never went into detail, but she did share that she had a criminal history. She wasn’t worried about the blogs as much as she was worried about how her business would take a hit and how it would look to Melrose Retail. Since she had never done any real time, when they asked her about her past, she didn’t tell them. They ran her background check, and nothing came up.

Emerald’s Path x Dee LaSure x 6/3

Jeremiah took the pendant from Emerald’s fingers and waited patiently as she gathered her braids together with both hands. He stared for a moment at the smooth unblemished expanse at the back of her neck before bending and placing the softest kiss in that spot.

He fastened the pendant around Emerald’s neck and admired how good it looked against her creamy sienna brown skin. He came from behind the overstuffed chair and took her hand in his. He was steady and sincere when he whispered her name. “Emmie.”

Emerald craned her neck to look up at Jeremiah. If anyone was to see her at the moment, they would swear she had the stars and the moon in her eyes, and Jeremiah was the man that put them there. She was well aware that he would do anything to make her happy.

“I knew from the moment God spoke to me that you were my person, and my life would forever change. The way we spent time getting to know one another as friends before we ever had our first date meant so much to me. We may have had a bit of drama when we were supposed to go on that first date, but from the moment I walked into that emergency room, I knew God had something different in mind. You were hurting, yet you still moved with grace. You were guarded, but still kind. Since I’ve known you, you’ve made me want to slow down and see someone fully, for the first time in a long time.”

SAMPLE SUNDAY

The War in his Heart x Mya Kay x 6/2/26

Warren jolted awake, wiping the sweat from his forehead. This was the third dream he’d had since Khadijah shared her past with him. They had already gone on their fifth date, but he had to admit, he was distracted. It was like no matter how much his spirit felt at ease, his mind kept telling him that he should walk away. The first dream showed him bailing her out of jail. From what he could tell, she was living a double life in the dream. The second dream showed Vanetta taking him to court for full custody because of his poor decision-making concerning Khadijah. Tonight’s dream showed Khadijah robbing him with some guys whose faces he couldn’t make out.

He threw his legs over the bed, then grabbed his glass of water. Gulping it down, he reached for his phone. He had a few notifications, but none from her. He checked in with her. Hey, baby girl. I couldn’t sleep. Are you okay? As he got up to relieve himself, he started feeling nauseous. He ran to the bathroom, throwing his head over the bowl in time. He had no idea what was going on. He only threw up when he was nervous, which was usually regarding football. He sat down on the cold floor, taking deep breaths in and out.

“God, what are you trying to tell me?” he said aloud. “Did I make the wrong decisions?”

Warren closed his eyes, then started praying. He wanted to know what the dreams meant, and while he had been a dreamer all of his life, very rarely did he ever sit with God to inquire about what the dreams meant. Nadine used to always tell him that he would regret not writing his dreams down and taking them back to God. She said she knew she was supposed to marry him because of a dream. He realized that now was the perfect time to start. He stood up, went to the bathroom, then rinsed out his mouth. As he stared at himself in the mirror, he looked at the bags that were forming under his eyes.

Between his decision to walk away from football and dealing with Khadijah’s past, he felt like God was testing him on all sides.

Emerald’s Path x Dee LaSure x 6/3

Emerald looked up into Jeremiah’s eyes. Her hand still rested on his bare chest as she sought comfort in the intense chocolate brown pools of his eyes. It was as if he was mapping out her features and committing them to memory. Emerald should know. That was what she’d been secretly doing ever since he first approached her one Sunday at church. She had an entire sketchbook dedicated to Jeremiah like she was a schoolgirl with a crush.

“Jeremiah, you’re wearing gray sweatpants! Gray sweatpants are men’s lingerie! They’re the devil’s work, I’m sure of it,” Emerald joked. She loved seeing men in gray sweatpants and for that she would have to keep praying to God to help her soul…and stop her eyes from wandering.
